Film Recorder Frequently Asked Questions:

Q.  What file format should the images be in?
A.  For best results, save the files in TIFF or JPEG format.   When using JPEG, save with medium to low compression (medium to high quality) for best results.

Q.  What about Genuine Fractals (*.stn) format?
A.  We can work with Genuine Fractals files as well.   There is a $1.00 per image additional charge to cover the extra handling/conversions involved.

Q.  Should I do anything special with the resolution?  How big should I make the file before sending it to you?

A.  You do not have to worry about the resolution.  We take care of that for you.

Q.  What kind of media can you read from?
A.  We prefer CD-R.  In addition, we can accept Zip Disks (100MB or 250MB), Imation Super Disks, Compact Flash, Smart Media, Microdrives, Type II & III PCMCIA media (hard drives and solid state).  Please note that all media will be returned with the completed order, however, Modern Imaging cannot be responsible for data integrity or media damage.

Q.  Can I e-mail the files to you?
A.  Yes, providing the e-mail (with attachments) is less than 2MB.  If the files are larger, special arrangements can be made for e-mailing (please contact us for details/instructions).

Q.  My images are square.  Will they be cropped to a rectangular format on the film?
A.  No.  The 35mm film frame is a 1:1.5 aspect ratio (the length is 1.5x longer than the height).  If the image is closer to square, there will be a black border "filling" the short edges of the frame.  If the image is longer (panoramic), there will be a black border "filling" the long edges of the frame.
The 6x7 (medium format) frame is 1:1.2 aspect ratio.  The same rules apply.

Q.  What if I want the image cropped to completely fill the frame?
A.  We ask that you do the cropping since it can be subjective.

Q.  What type of film do you use for slides?
A.  We use high quality Kodak Professional slide film (Ektachrome E100S).

Q.  I have noticed that your film recorder output looks much better/sharper than your competition.  Why is that?
A.  We analyze every file before sending it to the film recorders.  We prepare the files for optimal results.  And, of course, we use very high quality/resolution equipment.  This service is specifically for output of high quality photographic images.  Our competitors that specialize in low resolution "Power Point" slides are not yielding the optimal quality that your photographic images present.
